Resistance machines for weight loss and toning?
I have lost a lot of weght, from a size 24 to a 16. I am female, 53 years old. I started going to the gym in november. ( i exercised at home before that) I feel great. I go to the gym 3 times a week. I do resistance machines and different aerobic machines. My question. How long does it take to see a significant difference? On the leg machines I am up to about 120 pounds resistance. I do one set of reps 10 to 15 times until it is too difficult to continue.
Down deep I have never trustd that resisfance machines do anything yet I see men with muscles on them all the time going hyper and appearing to kill themselves. Am I being too gentle?
Should I go and do quick reps with heavy weights.
When will I see a significant change in my body? Any suggestions appreciated.
If you are doing 15 reps the weight is too low. I would continue to increase the weight until you can only do 6-10 reps. You don’t have to kill yourself to get results, but you should lift until failure while always maintaining perfect form. Its the last rep where you can no longer lift the weight but your muscles are still struggling to lift it that is most important for building muscle.
Also, when possible don’t be afraid to try to use free weights, they do not isolate muscles and draw on stabilizers so you work on and build a broader set of muscles.
Get a lot of rest between workouts to give your muscles time to recover, and concentrate on different muscle groups each day so that you are not stressing the same muscles more than twice in the same week. Also if your going to do cardio do not do it on the same day as weight training. Keep track of your progress and you will see results before you know it.
