What are the rules of Karate sparring and compitition?
Hello, I was just wondering, what are the rules for Kyokushin Karate sparing and compititions? I know that there is no punching the the face in compititions, but can you do it in sparring with gloves to reduce the risk of injury? Also can you knee or elbow in the compititions?
I also have another question, what is the differance between Kyokushin Karate and Shotokan Karate?
There is a Kyokushin and Shotokan Karate dojo near where I live and was thinking of joining one of them, for weight loss and self defence techneqiues.

Kyokushin is a Full contact style of martial Arts, it is similar to Shotokan. Both teach kata, and in fact both use some of the same Kata. They also both have kata that the other doesn’t.
I may be out of date to a point ( it has been since the early 90’s since I competed) but every tournament I was in they did allow punching and kicking to the head in a controlled manor.
Tae Kwon Do Olympic style competitions are the only ones I know of that have different point values for different techniques, their way of justifying all the fluffy fancy kicks.
The best advice for this or any situation is to chose between instructors, not styles. Quality instruction and your dedication to practice and learning are far more important than what style it is, that is especially true in the case of two styles that are so similar.
